The Jewish Holocaust Centre in association with the

  Australian Jewish Genealogical Society (Vic)

invite you to a panel presentation on the topic:

What we found at the Red Cross International Tracing Service

at Bad Arolsen, Germany’

on  Sunday, 10th August 2008 at 2.00 pm

at the Jewish Holocaust Museum and Research Centre,

15 Selwyn St., Elsternwick

Note: This is a repeat of the presentation given to the AJGS (Vic) in June.

Between May 5 to 9 this year AJGS (Vic) members, Liz James, Debbie Jurblum and Lionel Sharpe joined a group of 40 genealogists from USA, Australia, Israel and Great Britain to carry out research at the Nazi archive located at the small town of Bad Arolsen, north of Frankfurt, Germany. This extensive collection of Holocaust records was finally unlocked to the public in November 2007 and this group was the largest to have visited the archive to date. Six Australians were among the participants in this visit which was arranged by Gary Mokotoff  and Dr Sallyann Sack, (editor of the journal ‘Avotaynu’).

The presentation will outline the kind of records to be found on 26,000 metres of shelf space containing 50 million index cards and concerning 17.5 million civilians persecuted by the Nazis. These records are contained in a number of separate buildings in the town.  The presenters will give specific examples of successful searches and point to strategies in recovering lost names. Guidelines will be given about how to access this amazing collection by mail and email and the possibility of visiting the ITS in the future.

NEW SOUTH WALES AND VICTORIAN DEATH CERTIFICATES

The following are a listing of 1000 death certificates of Jews who died

in NSW and Victoria between 1870 and 1980. They were placed in our care

by the Australian Jewish Historical Society (Vic). These certificates

were purchased by Professor Bill Rubinstein in the early 1980s for a

sociological study he conducted on the occupational status of Jews in

NSW and Victoria. He presented these certificates to the AJHS in

                                                                  September 1984.

The random sample was drawn from the following time periods.

                             1870-1874, 1900-1903, 1928-1932, 1950-1951 and 1979-1980.

If you wish to receive information about or a copy of a particular

certificate, please contact the Society on <ajgs@exist.com.au> giving

the name of the deceased and specify NSW or Victoria.
